At first glance, the results of a July 9 Marist Poll do not seem to offer any positive takeaways for Green Party candidate Howie Hawkins.
The poll, which was conducted in conjunction with NBC 4 New York and The Wall Street Journal, surveyed 833 New Yorkers across the state. It showed Gov. Cuomo with a large lead over Republican challenger Rob Astorino, 59 percent to 24 percent, while Hawkins received only 6 percent. Combined with his advantage in campaign spending, Cuomo’s re-election bid appears as strong as ever.
However, the Hawkins campaign remains hopeful. If the poll results hold in the general election, the Green Party would likely be granted the third party line on the statewide ballot for the 2016 and 2018 elections, ahead of the Working Families, Conservative and Independence parties.
