LEWISTON, Maine —Maine libertarians are split on who should be their candidate for president.

At the state party convention Sunday in Lewiston, both former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson and blogger Austin Petersen received 12 votes.

John McAfee and Darryl Perry each received one vote.

Johnson leads the race nationally.

The state party will send five delegates to the national convention later this month. It’s the largest number of delegates the state party has sent to a national convention since 2000.

“We need to send a message to our current leaders and future leaders of the two-party system that there is an alternative or we’re not happy we’re going with these people,” Maine Libertarian Party chair Chris Lyons said. “One of the reasons that we’re growing rapidly now and that people appeal to us is that we believe in bottom up, not top down.”

The Libertarian Party is the nation’s third-largest, with 250,000 registered voters, the party said.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., won the Maine Republican and Democratic caucuses in March.
