Jim Thompson: Green Party’s Stein to speak in Athens as efforts to get her on state’s presidential ballot continue

Jill Stein, the Green Party’s nominee for president of the United States, will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Room 101 of the Miller Learning Center at the University of Georgia, according to the party’s local chapter.

Stein’s appearance in Athens also includes an effort to collect signatures to get her on the ballot in Georgia, said Bruce Dixon, co-chairman of the Georgia Green Party.

Under Georgia law, the Green Party and other minor political parties are defined not as parties, but as political bodies, and must, like independent candidates, petition for a place on the general election ballot. Part of the process includes collecting a set number of signatures from registered voters who participated in the most recent previous presidential election.
