Throwback Thursday: On May 25th, 2013, I interviewed a campaign operative for David Earl Williams III, a libertarian conservative candidate who ran for the Republican Party’s nomination for Congress in Illinois’ 9th district, losing in a close contest with 47.6%, or 14,148 votes. Williams III quit the GOP in late 2015 and now is running as an independent for the same congressional seat this year, and has publicly stated that after the election he plans on joining the Libertarian Party.

David Earl Williams III (born January 8, 1984) is a U.S. Navy Iraqi Freedom War veteran, a Republican candidate in 2014  and an Independent candidate in 2016  for U.S. Representative for Illinois’s 9th congressional district.
Born in Evanston, Illinois, he and his two sisters’ grew up in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood in the care of his mother. He was a member of the Academic decathlon team at Nicholas Senn High School which he would graduate from in 2002. Several months upon graduating from high school, he would then enlist into the U.S. Navy during Operation Iraqi Freedom where he worked as a Logistics Specialist. He was stationed on board theU.S.S Cowpens in Yokosuka, Kanagawa, Japan, from 2002 until he received an honorable discharge and decorated 8x times in 2006. After leaving the Navy, he studied abroad at Lethbridge College in Alberta, Canada, where he earned an associate degree in general studies in 2008. Returning back to the U.S. in 2010, he was involved with community organizations such as WeAreChange Chicago, Blue Republican, Convoy of Hope,National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Restore the Fourth, American Legion and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks  Williams also wrote and published a novel in 2007, titled Valor Tale.
